dreamscapes

so i barely slept at all last night; at least not good sleep. my night-time brain was filled was bizarre dreams and strange images. just a couple of highlights i can remember...

  • for some reason, i am standing in front of an audience in a concert hall at some university, as emcee for a talent show or somesuch. i'm trying to tell jokes and their bombing terribly. fortunately, there is some sort of terrorist chemical attack pending and everyone starts screaming and running away. this is good, because i cannot tell any good jokes. suddenly, i'm with my parents and we are looking for a shelter that is bio-warfare proof. don't remember much else, but turns out either the attack was a hoax or missed us. so maybe not a nightmare.
  • Cory lets me know, a day before his court appearance, that he got a DUI while his license was suspended for something else. none of which i knew about. so naturally, i go all nutfuck apeshit on him and start screaming. that's about all. not sure what it means.
  • this is the one that upset me the most for some reason. i suddenly realize i have been renting an apartment that i forgot about. i had been living there, moved out, and left most of my stuff there. so i go back and some random guy who had been one of my roommates (no one i know in real life) is living there by himself, but has a lot of party people hanging around. the place is trashed and mostly devoid of furniture and other accoutrements. oh, and ever CD i ever lost was there. figures. turns out he has been selling my clothes and furniture to help pay for rent and bills, which in the cold light of rationality, you can't really be angry about. but i still am. mostly upset he has been acting like he owns my stuff.

so just general dream weirdness. i don't really care to psycho-analyze it. might turn out to mean something. :-)

the decline and fall of the american empire

after having just watched the final episode of the HBO series Rome this weekend, i can't help but notice a lot of similarities between that great republic in decline and our own american empire.

  • corrupt political structure: constant fighting for supremacy of one faction over another, usually at the cost of the common people's interests. dictators and pundits using military might and scare tactics to seize power. the so-called republic is more of a fascist regime, with large business entities dictating laws and citizens have little to no individual voice.

  • unstable social hierarchy: the wealthy live in luxury and decadence while the poor and common people starve and slave away.

More later. Maybe.
